The Houston Oilers were a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. They were a member of the American Football League (AFL) from 1960 to 1969 and then joined the National Football League (NFL) as part of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The team was one of the eight original franchises in the AFL.
The Oilers played their home games at the Astrodome, a multi-purpose stadium located in Houston. The Astrodome was often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” and was the first indoor stadium in the world.
The team’s colors were Columbia blue and white, and their logo featured a derrick, representing Houston’s association with the oil industry.
The Oilers had some successful seasons during their tenure, and they are best known for their success in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Led by Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon, the team made multiple playoff appearances during that era.
In the mid-1990s, the Oilers moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and were renamed the Tennessee Oilers. Later, in 1999, the team became the Tennessee Titans, the name they still use today.
While the Houston Oilers no longer exist as a team, they hold a special place in the hearts of football fans in Houston, and their legacy lives on through the memories of their successful years and the impact they had on the city and the sport of football.
